Sustainable Shift Recognized as Transformational by Maverick Awards

Alberta’s Prominent Homes honoured in national awards

Now in its second year, Built Green Canada’s Maverick Awards reward and profile leadership in sustainable building, across three exclusive categories—these saw entries from British Columbia through to Ontario. One of the finalists for the Transformational Award is Prominent Homes in Calgary and Edmonton. This award’s purpose is to recognize the impact sustainability practices can have in driving real change—enabling fundamental progress.

While the company has long had a basic understanding of sustainability concepts in the built environment, their focus was on traditional methods, with limited consideration for energy performance, environmental impact or long-term benefits for homeowners. However, since 2023, Prominent Homes has embarked on a transformational journey, redefining their approach to homebuilding. As they expanded production from 50 homes to 140, they committed to having all homes go through BUILT GREEN® certification. Today, it’s their standard to build beautiful homes that are also optimized for reduced energy consumption, improved indoor air quality and a lower environmental impact— reducing their carbon footprint but also creating healthier, more comfortable homes for their customers.

Sustainability is now woven into their operations, starting with their hiring practices for trades and suppliers—they seek partners who commit to eco-friendly practices and high-performance materials. And their commitment to sustainability has fostered stronger collaborations with these partners who share their vision. The collective drive has accelerated their learning curve and established a network of expertise that benefits every project. This rigorous selection ensures every element—from concrete to framing, HVAC systems to low-VOC paints and water-saving fixtures—meets their elevated green standards.

Meanwhile, having an Energy Advisor perform blower door tests on every home helps Prominent Homes test and tighten their envelope and energy systems. They value data-driven decision-making, which fits perfectly with third-party testing and certification. By consistently tracking and analyzing performance metrics, such as blower door test results, energy consumption and material efficiency, they have gained critical insights that inform their continuous improvement efforts. These metrics have been instrumental in identifying both successes and areas for further innovation, ensuring that they remain accountable and agile.

This comprehensive transformation marks a significant shift. Today, Prominent Homes’ sustainable building practices are integral to their business strategy, driving measurable change and setting a new benchmark for responsible homebuilding. As a next step, they are exploring net zero ready and net zero homes, examining the processes and innovations needed to achieve these goals.

“Our transition toward sustainable building is more than a change in construction methods; it is a transformation in mindset, operations and long-term vision,” says Harman Dhillon, Operations Manager at Prominent Homes Ltd. “This journey has reinforced our belief that sustainability is not just an industry trend but a responsibility that extends beyond individual projects to impact entire communities and future generations.”

Prominent Homes’ decision to embrace sustainable building was motivated by a long-term vision of a better future for their customers, the industry and our planet. They recognized that while traditional practices had been effective in the past, the inevitable evolution of the building industry was guiding them toward sustainable solutions. Instead of waiting for market or regulatory shifts to force change upon them, they proactively aimed to transform their operations and the homes they construct, positioning themselves at the forefront of industry-wide growth.

They’ve found their journey toward sustainable building practices has yielded significant benefits across all aspects of their business, directly affecting their customers, internal operations, trade partners and the broader community. This commitment also plays a crucial role in environmental preservation and social well-being.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this transformation has been the positive response from homeowners. Seeing the tangible benefits—lower energy bills, improved indoor air quality, and enhanced durability—reinforces Prominent Homes’ decision to take this step forward. It has also fueled their passion to continue innovating and improving with each new project.

With that said, their commitment extends beyond the customer experience. Prominent Homes is dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint and ensuring that their building practices contribute to a healthier planet. Through this self-motivated shift toward sustainability, they are not only setting a benchmark for responsible construction today but also working to inspire an industry-wide movement that will shape the future of homebuilding. They aim to establish a legacy of innovation and environmental responsibility by leading the way in Built Green certifications for all homes, thereby promoting a more resilient and sustainable industry for future generations.

As part of this, they have emphasized the importance of education and early integration of sustainability principles. By ensuring that their teams, including internal staff and trade partners, are well-versed in green building technologies and energy-efficient design, they have established a foundation for more innovative and resilient projects. This proactive education has enabled them to better anticipate challenges and streamline their processes, ultimately enhancing the quality of their homes.

A significant takeaway from their transformation is the necessity of embedding sustainability from the start of the design phase. Integrating eco-friendly materials and systems into their initial planning simplifies the construction process and ensures that the final product meets rigorous environmental standards. Their experiences have shown that retrofitting traditional methods with sustainable practices is far less effective than designing projects with these principles in mind from the outset.

Looking ahead, Prominent Homes sees this as just the beginning. They aim to refine their processes further, explore net-zero energy and continue advocating for higher sustainability standards within the industry. Their hope is that their transformation serves as an example, encouraging others to embrace sustainability—not as an obligation but as an opportunity to build smarter, more efficient and more responsible homes.

The Maverick Awards are another step forward in Built Green Canada's mission to progress sustainability practices and recognize leadership; this year, four winners have been announced in conjunction with title co-sponsors, Jayman BUILT and SkyFire Energy. The Mavericks awarded Jim Zsiros of J. Zsiros Contracting with the Ambassador Award for exemplifying the power of hands-on ambassadorship—he’s created a ripple effect that’s elevated green building standards, particularly Built Green, across the region. Meanwhile, s2e Technologies won the Innovation Award for their London-based project, EVE Park, which is aiming for a net zero residential development rethinking suburban living: addressing high performance buildings and smart parking. While the Transformational Award, sponsored by Alberta Real Estate Foundation, had a tie this year. One of its winners is Best Builders for their Phoenix House in Delta, a remarkable rebuild setting a new benchmark for low-carbon renovations, while addressing resilience and holistic sustainability. The other winner is Spring Creek Mountain Village in Canmore, which has transformed from a mobile home park into an impressive multi-phase community largely fueled by geo-exchange, which embraces social, environmental and economic sustainability.

The organization offers programs for Single Family (including Net Zero Energy+), Single Family Renovations, High Density (including multi-storey, residential tower, and mixed-use), High Density Renovations, Communities, and Restorations with Small Commercial in pilot.
