Westhills Subdivision Hits 1,000th BUILT GREEN® Home
Longtime BUILT GREEN® member-developer, Westhills Land Corp, has reached a milestone with their Westhills’ development in Langford, reaching their 1,000th home—each BUILT GREEN® certified.
One of the largest subdivisions on Vancouver Island, this 517-acre master-planned community is home to 3,300 residents: about one in 15 Langford residents live here, while many more work within or attend the three new schools, play in the parks, and use the trail systems in the Westhills’ community. Furthermore, approximately 30% of all BUILT GREEN® certified homes within the Greater Victoria region have been constructed at Westhills!
Initial plans go back nearly 20 years, beginning in 2006, while the first homes were completed in 2009. As the population in the Capital Regional District booms, Westhills provides a range of housing options—currently, this includes 683 single-family houses, 203 townhouses and 114 condominiums. With 1,000 homes already built, thousands of additional homes are in the works, alongside retail spaces, offices, parks and recreational sites.
“We’ve been watching this impressive development progress over the years and commend Westhills’ leadership on building more sustainably,” says Jenifer Christenson, CEO at Built Green Canada. “This is a developer who has long shown unwavering commitment to voluntarily building beyond code towards a better built, healthier home that lasts longer.”
Currently, Langford requires Step 3 for part 9 buildings and Step 2 for part 3—and this addresses energy performance alone; meanwhile, Westhills has reached targets in the Built Green program across six other areas of sustainable building as well.
“While working to address the region’s critical housing needs, we’ve also been focused on building through a sustainable framework.” says Ryan McKenzie, general manager at Westhills. “We’re proud to reach this 1,000-home milestone, knowing we’re creating a better neighbourhood in which to live.”
Nestled between Langford Lake and Mount Wells Regional Park, and surrounded by interconnected walking trails, Westhills is ideally located for nature enthusiasts, with access to urban amenities—they have something for everyone. This community combines sustainability, design excellence, and quality construction. They’re not just building homes, but eco-conscious havens, including utilizing geothermal energy for heating and cooling.
Building a strong, diverse community while addressing the critical need for additional housing in this rapidly growing region is key to Westhills’ vision. Meanwhile, across urban BC, Langford is one of the few cities to which the provincial government has not given a housing target—what with the robust development already taking place.
There’s much more to come from this exciting community! In the meantime, check out their most recent BUILT GREEN® certified project, Solaris, a six-storey condo building here.
